5 Must Have Knitting Accessories

There is no shortage of knitting stuff you can buy.

I am all for minimalism when it comes to accessories. I am not a naturally organized person so keeping things minimal means few items for me to keep track of any put away. However there are a few tools and accessories I just don’t think you can live without.

#1 A good project bag

This is a new addition to my knitting accessories and it’s honestly something I didn’t know I needed. Now that I have one I’m not sure how I lived without it.

My project bag is the perfect size for holding a sizable project and the associated yarn. It has pockets all along the outside that are perfect for stashing tools an notions. It’s got handles so I can easily carry it around the house or take it with me when I am out an about.

Having a project bag has given me an easy place to stash my current project. I am not a naturally organized person so I am not good at putting things away. Now, when I set my knitting down it goes into my project bag so my knitting is always put away no matter where I leave it. All of my everyday knitting tools fit conveniently into this bag so they are no longer strewn across the house.

#2 A small pair of scissors

Ideally, you want a pair of scissors that are too small to be useful for anything other than trimming yarn ends and cutting steaks. This way no one in your household will be tempted to abscond with them. Or maybe your family members don’t take the scissors and leave them places where no one else can find them. Either way a small pair of scissors fits more easily into your knitting bag.

#3 A retractable tape measure

No one has so much free time on their hands that they need to spend it untangling their measuring tape. A retractable tape measure is easy to store and never gets tangled.

#4 A set of darning needles

For years I only owned one darning needle. It got the job done and keeping track of it certainly kept me on my toes. Having a few different darning needles allows you to select the correct size needle for the job.

#5 Locking stitch markers

If you are only going to own one set of stitch markers I highly recommend going with the locking bulb shaped stitch makers. They aren’t bulky like the plastic locking stitch markers and the can be used any place you would use the small ring stitch markers. However, the inverse is not true. Sometimes you need to mark a specific stitch and that requires having a stitch marker you can open and close.
